World cup in rollerskiing returns to Latvia

After ten  years World cup in rollerskiing once again returns to Latvia, as from 24th till 26th of July Latvian North–East skiing centre Madona will host the second stage of World cup 2015. From Friday to Sunday skiers will compete in three different events (sprint, prologue and pursuit), comprising both skiing styles – free technique and classical technique. Competition includes races for participants of junior and senior groups.

Latvia hosted World cup in rollerskiing for the first time back in 2004 and also following year in 2005. Skiers competed in the streets of beautiful and one of the oldest Latvian city Cesis and also in nearby skiing and biathlon track Priekuli. Then several years only local scale competitions, including national championships, and also Baltic cup took place. Now after ten years World cup returns to Latvia, but this time it will take place in skiing centre in Madona, which is known for skiers as host place of Scandinavian cup stage in winter for the last five years.

In order to prepare for World cup this year, Latvian Skiing association in 2014 organized in Madona a FIS race. Then together with Latvians also participated athletes from Lithuania, Belarus and Russian national junior team, including world junior championships winner and medallists. Skiers competed in classical style sprint and also in middle distance in free technique. Latvian Skiing association in cooperation with Madona municipality and sports club “A-Madona” did a good job and were awarded the right to organize the stage of World cup in 2015.

The second stage of World cup 2015 in Madona will include three days competition. It will start with the 200m sprint in free technique on Friday and will take place in the street of Madona city centre. Sprint Finals will be organized with top 16 from qualification and with 4 athletes in a heat. Next two days athletes will compete in the Smeceresils track on the 2,5km lap. Saturday is scheduled prologue (5km for ladies and 7,5km for men) in classical technique, but World cup will end on Sunday with pursuit race in free technique (10km for ladies and 15km for men). For Prologue and Pursuit organisers will provide rollerskis. Rollerski brand: Ski*go (Sweden.
