Annual FIS race in Priekuli next weekend

Latvian Skiing association next weekend on the 10th and 11th of January organizes FIS races and National championships in cross country skiing, which will take place in Skiing and biathlon center Priekuli. Two days competition includes 5km for ladies and 10km for men in classical style on Saturday, and the same distances in free technique on Sunday. Both days competition will be held with interval start.

Latvian national championships stage in cross country skiing in Priekuli as a FIS race started in 2011 and this time it will be the fifth year in a row this northern skiing center in Latvia will host national championships in FIS status and welcoming athletes from other countries. Competition is organized by Latvian Skiing association in cooperation with Olympic center of Cesis and it contains usual short distances in classical style on the first day and free technique on the other day. For ladies it is 5km, but for men 10km.

Competitors will have to ski the 2,5km lap with height difference of 41m and total climb of 77m. Despite warm weather and plus degrees last few days, there is still enough snow and organizers are working hard to prepare the best conditions as possible for the competition. Due lack of natural snow whole 2.5km course is prepared with artificial snow.

Last year competition in Priekuli was in February as the second stage of National championships and was just after the World junior championships therefore in addition to neighbours Estonians and Lithuanians also strong Canadian team with best juniors and U23 took part, which we will see this year again in February, because during the next weekend Canadians have their own national championship. In addition to often guests from Brazil, for the first time will be competitor from Denmark.

This season Estonian skiing centre Otepe after two years of absence will host World cup stage again on 17th and 18th of January. Competition in Priekuli is just a weekend before the World cup in nearby Otepe, which is approximately 100km from Priekuli. New hotel is opened last year just two kilometers from Priekuli skiing track, so good training facilities is provided.
